T he area of Upper Kamenjak is situated between Premantura and Volme. It is a place of exceptional landscape values full of various habitats. From pastures of sage, garrigue to holm oak maquis and Aleppo pine forests, this area reveals unforgettable views.
Since 1996, Upper Kamenjak has been protected as a significant landscape and research has shown that it is an extremely valuable floristic area. Namely, in Upper Kamenjak there are 487 different species of plants. Such a large number of plant species in a relatively small area indicates a high degree of biological diversity.
In 2012, in the area of Upper Kamenjak, for the first time Catapodium pauciflorum, an annual grass species, was included in the Croatian flora.
The area is ideal for walking, cycling and outdoor recreation. Signposts and information tables will provide you with additional information about this protected area that reveals peculiar nature, paleontological remains as well as historical heritage hidden within numerous Austro-Hungarian remains. The remains of the Austro-Hungarian military facilities have become a shelter for the most important maternity colony of bats in the southern part of Istria with 7 different species.
